Some Basics about Dog Training

Dogs can be very sociable and therefore dog training is the key to a positive and loving family relationship with your dog. Unfortunately dogs sometimes get too sociable and can get aggressive. That is one important reason why it is necessary to train your dog to control behavior. Training starts the moment your puppie comes home.

Training sessions should start in the backyard and be kept short. Training before "six months of age" is fine if you see the puppy having fun with these lessons. Dog training is most effective if everyonewho handles the dog takes part in the training to ensure consistent commands, methods, dog behavior and enforcement.

Unfortunately dog training the right way is not that easy. Certain things must be employed to have positive results. Training would be a cinch if dogs spoke the same language that people speak but they don't do. The thing most needed in dog training is what experts define as “positive reinforcement.” This refers to the way people reward their dogs with treats, praises, or both whenever their dogs show positive behavior.

Training techniques and equipmentTraining can be accomplished at home, in an obedience class, or with a private trainer. A training collar gives the handler control. Training opens up a line of communication between you and your pet dog.  Training your dog properly strengthens the bond that already exists between dog and handler. Moreover, dog training is important to avoid dog biting incidents. Statistics show that 77% of dog biting cases are mostly those that are within the family.

With a good dog training bad habits are removed and dogs have better control of their feelings and behavior towards environmental and social variables. Training these owners and their pets with the Sit Means Sit method is a fantastic ground-floor opportunity for a dog training business.

Treats are an excellent way to start a training program and serve many purposes. Positive reinforcement is the key for dog training. Dogs are able to undertstand that treats and praises will come whenever he shows good behavior. When the owner gives his dog some treats for obediently obeying his commands, the dog will think that obeying commands when told equals treats and this is the only lesson he undertands easily.

But this doesn't necessarily mean that when the dog did not obey the owner’s commands, punishment is needed as counter reinforcement. The opposite is the case as punishments will only make the matter worst. What will happen is that your dog will be confused. A confused dog will begin to doubt your feelings.

The next thing that you must remember when training your dog is that people should avoid training their dogs into a bad habit. Actually, many people are not aware they are doing this but there are instances wherein the people’s reaction towards some behavior of the dog will inadvertently train the dog in a bad way.

A good example is always, when dogs bark. Normally they do that because they recognize something strange or unfamiliar to them. When dogs continue to bark, even if it includes something that is familar for us, it could become a problem.

Unfortuantely most people react loudly and start to yell and tell their dogs to shut up. But this particular reaction of dog owners is a big mistake. It will confuse their dogs even more. The dogs will understand that reaction in a way that they believe that their owners are also enjoying the shouting scene and that they are “barking” along with their dogs.

The key point here is to avoid paying attention to the dog. In time, he will stop. That's when you should reward your dog.

To bing it to the point - dog training is all about positive reinforcements to reap positive results.
